ANNOUNCEMENT: Brand new Luftwaffe forum starting up!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Just a heads up. As you all should know by now, Peter announced here the LEMB will be closing for member participation on Friday 29th August. As a result, myself and a group of like-minded existing LEMB members have decided to start a new forum to try and continue the work that Peter started. This will be a new forum starting from the ground up and Peter has kindly offered to keep LEMB accessible to the existing membership as an archive. We have his blessing to link, to source, and to continue any discussions that already exist on LEMB, plus any new discussions can start on the new forum. The structure of the forums and sub-forums will more or less mirror LEMB as it stands now with perhaps some minor changes.

I do not have a lot of spare time to run the forum on my own due to other commitments so I have enlisted the help of a band of trusted LEMB members who specialise in certain areas to help me with the day to day running of the forum and keep tabs on the areas that they specialise in.

Over the coming weeks I will be setting up a bare bones online presence of the new forum and this will gradually start to build up into a working forum. All LEMB members are welcome to join but as you can imagine its going to take time to build and grow into something substantial and we can only do it with your help and patience.

I am still seeking any members who would be willing to take over the role of looking after the following sections:

  • Pilots and aircrew

So if anyone feels that they could take one of the above sections under their wing and help to build it into a useful resource then please do not hesitate to post below or PM me.

Put the following address into your bookmarks and keep checking over the coming weeks.

www.luftwaffe-research-group.org

As soon as we are ready to start taking members I will announce it here and on the new forum.

As we have discussed privately, I greatly welcome your initiative and I will endeavor to get a one digit member number.

If I may make a modest suggestion. Go for few but active members, instead of a huge number who mostly only suck up informations.

Despite being one of those who fall in the category of "sucking up" information, I appreciate the initiative from Clint and the LEMB group to continue a forum of this quality. Hopefully I can contribute something to the new forum.

Looking forward to participate. Thanks Clint for carrying the torch forward.

I would not be too harsh regarding contributors and suckers. There were instances I was ready to make a contribution but another memebr had alredy posted the same info I had so I just did not want to duplicate anything and refrained from posting. Just my couple of cents.

Regards,

Norbert

Thank you for taking on what at times must be a thankless task. I'd be very sorry to see it degenerate into a private talking shop for a minority of Luftwaffe cognoscenti. I think it is important to be open to sensible questions from anyone, however ignorant or however unable to contribute anything fresh the visitor is. Spreading the word is key.

Yes please Clint et al, I would like to be a Member. I have contributed in the past, but have also sucked up info..... what was it Peter used say.... if I remember correctly.... "I learn, you learn, we all learn". All power to your elbow Clint and thank you for standing up and continuing this good work.....

Thank you

I greatly welcome your initiative and hope the new Luftwaffe Research Group will become as good as LEMB was/is. Big task up ahead but we have no choice then to make it work.

Good initiative, I have bookmarked the new address but it seems like I can remove it again.

Go for few but active members, instead of a huge number who mostly only suck up informations.

Segregation has already started ... ... !

Kind regards,

Christer

And that's all anyone can do. We all have our strengths and weaknesses but a willingness to contribute has to be key to making the new forum a success as it is (at least in part) that which has contributed to Peter moving on. Personally I've always appreciated a number of your posts. Your modelling skills are way above mine.

Well, I am very shocked to hear LEMB is closing shop. Lucky I was able to get in an make some last posts after a too long absence. Happy there is a replacement and most of all happy Peter will keep parts of this excellent site alive for us. 3 cheers to Peter!

Very good to hear you and those trusted members have taken this task upon you. I'll be checking your progress and look forward to seeing the "research group" up and running.

It will only be a success.

Top work Clint... Cheers mate!

@Junker - As for keeping membership restricted to only those who are 'active', you'd need to define that for me. I'm not having a go at you or anyone (in fact, I'm a fan of keeping forums clear of 'dead accounts' and etc), but thinking about this from my perspective - I don't really consider that I have been as 'active' as I could have been (Work/Research/Life etc - seems the higher one climbs the Academic ladder the more work you have to do :( ), plus I have fairly narrow scope of interests (late Night-fighters - mostly the He219A - Fw190 Dora's and the Ta152). Beyond those limits, I have little to 'actively' contribute; maybe the odd piece of Me262 or Bf109G-10 or Ta183 or airfield stuff, but one could hardly accuse me of being well-rounded across the entire gamut of 'stuff' - especially bombers/dive bombers, early Bf109's, trainers, etc.

That said, when then new board goes live, I'll sign up and be as 'active' as life allows... :)

#23: Being active, from my point of view is to post at least a bit, or say thank you to members who makes materiel to download available. Your interest have loads of posting on LEMB, so it's not a narrow topic ;) But this is only my thoughts. It's up to the moderators of the new forum to state the rules.

Dear Clint, it's good news to hear that you will try to cover the loss we'll all incur with the closing down of the good old LEMB; for your new project you can certainly count on me within the known (time) limits.

Best wishes

Jochen

Hi Clint and to all the others who will continue the marvellous work Peter has done for years - thank you all for your efforts - past, present and those which will come in the future. I'm most grateful for keeping alive the one place on the .net which I would miss most. As well as the other members here I'm looking forward to the new forum and hope I find the time and have the knowledge to contribute as often as I liked to do here. Sadly there is a world outside the hobby which takes up more and more time. Therefore I appreciate your work.
Thanks again! All the best and bye for now.
Best regards
Ralph Zimmer

That's great news indeed, thank you Peter for such a wonderful forum in LEMB and thank you Clint for taking the initiative with the new venture. I am very worried at the calls for invite only - at least that is what they seem to be. Graham's comment sums up my thoughts "I'd be very sorry to see it degenerate into a private talking shop for a minority of Luftwaffe cognoscenti."

Wasn't the motto 'I learn, you learn, we all learn'???

all the best, and hope I make it in!

Nick

Hello Clint,

Thanks for continueing Peter's tremendously admired forum on which I periodically have been active. Looking for a new job about almost over a year now, my priorities have been shifted so I may have turned into a irregular visitor, mostly looking into threads out of curiosity.

Keep up the good work and I hope to join the new forum soon, Marcel

Thanks again for all the posts of encouragement. Also I must point out that the new forum will NOT be an invitation only kind of thing. All existing LEMB members and anyone new is welcome to join and take part in the discussions. I am incredibly busy with other commitments at the moment so spare time to set up the new forum is very limited. The amount of work involved is unbelievable and goes some way to showing what Peter was up against, single hand-idly, all the time with LEMB. I want the transition to the new forum to be as easy as possible for all users, computer literate or not, so I've got to spend time testing it and ironing out issues before I open it to a deluge of new members who would then subsequently swamp me with personal messages and posts as why certain functions are not working correctly. Be patient and it will all be fine I promise, it's slowly getting there..... ;)

Hi, we will begin accepting new membership registrations at 12:00pm GMT tomorrow (12th September 2014).

The following is important with regards to you registering a suitable username:

Usernames: To become a member we prefer that you use your full real name. At the very least we ask that your username be either your full first name and the initial of your surname, for example ‘Joe B’ or the initial of your first name and your full surname, for example ‘J Bloggs’. Any membership applications that contain usernames that look suspicious and do not adhere to the above rule will simply be rejected without warning. This rule is in place to make it easier to recognise spammers and spam bots. If your initial membership application was rejected please try again with your real name or one that adheres to the above rules. Any form of SS or Nazi linked names are strictly forbidden and will also be rejected without warning.

It is possible that we could be a deluge of new membership application requests so please be patient and I will approve them as fast as my time permits.

Hopefully we will see you soon. :)

Hi Clint/Peter. Post 39. Thanks for all your hard work in getting this new venture off the ground. I personally (and I hope other members) will adhere to all the rules and not to pester you over 'silly' things as I appreciate your time and efforts are limited in getting this started and running successfully. I look forward to the future of this site and it's achievements. Also to Peter for all his efforts and work over the years and that everything that LEMB has achieved and brought to the member's attention. A VERY BIG THANK YOU.

Regards

Tom

Thanks Tom, most of the rules are the same as on the LEMB because they are pretty much essential on a digital medium. I have streamlined the rules to a certain extent though by simply removing everyone's ability to break them in the first place.

The 'Welcome & Rules' topic is now viewable on the front page to unregistered viewers. I urge everyone to have a look and read them whilst we get the forum ready for tomorrow. Especially important is the dedicated topic on why we also cannot have gaps in abbreviations. I have attempted to explain this once and for all in a very easy to understand way. If after reading it people still can't understand why this particular rule was in place here on 'LEMB' and on the new 'LRG' then I'm baffled.

See you over there.... :)

Thank Clint, I will keep track of the progress you make with LRG and join in asap. Good luck for this Big task!

And again a giant Thank you to Peter Evans for your incredibily enduring endevour to keep LEMB up for nearly 20 years. It has become some a life line between us Luftwaffe enthusiasts and a digital network that keep us together - we will miss it and you!
